Title: Assistant Professor of Applied Animal Ethology. The Department of Animal Science in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Assistant Professor of Applied Animal Ethology. This is an academic year (9-month), tenure track, Assistant Professor position with teaching, research, outreach and service responsibilities and includes the expectation that the appointee will conduct mission-oriented research and outreach of relevance to the California Agricultural Experiment Station (http://www.caes.ucdavis.edu/admin/resources/aes/overview). 

Responsibilities:   The Department of Animal Science is building world-class expertise in animal welfare through a faculty core in the disciplines that contribute to the evaluation of animal welfare. We are seeking applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with research efforts focused on affective states in animals, such as, but not limited to, pain, fear and distress. The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded research program with research that may include development of methods to assess animals’ behavioral, neurosensory and/or cognitive responses to housing and management, and strategies to mitigate or prevent negative states. The successful candidate will coordinate with existing departmental faculty having expertise in microbiology, immunology, nutrition, modeling, genetics and genomics, physiology, behavior, reproduction, and food science. The appointee will teach an undergraduate upper division course in animal behavior (“Principles of Domestic Animal Behavior” Animal Science 104) and one in animal ethics (“Ethics of Animal Use” Animal Science 170) to meet the teaching needs of the departmental curriculum. Mentoring of graduate students, undergraduate student advising, curricular development, participation in and development of outreach programs, and performance of departmental and university service are expected. The successful candidate is expected to work with extension faculty and other partners to provide support for California’s animal industries and consistent with the mission of the California Agricultural Experiment Station.

Qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent degree with an emphasis on applied animal ethology. Post-doctoral experience is preferred. Evidence of research excellence is expected. The candidate should have the ability to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses and the ability to develop and conduct extramurally-funded research involving the assessment of animals’ affective states.

Departmental resources: The appointee will have access to wide-ranging animal and infrastructure resources and many collaborative opportunities within the department and across the campus. This position is expected to interact with extension faculty and partners in animal agriculture. The research, teaching and outreach mission of the Department of Animal Science (http://animalscience.ucdavis.edu) focuses on the creation, development and distribution of basic and applied knowledge related to the biology and production of domestic animals, with a scope extending from the molecular to the ecosystem levels.

Salary: Commensurate with experience within the Assistant Professor rank at the University of California.
