Title: Assistant Professor of Meat Science. The Department of Animal Science in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Assistant Professor of Meat Science. This is an academic year (9-month), tenure track, Assistant Professor position with teaching, research, outreach and service responsibilities and includes the expectation that the appointee will conduct mission-oriented research and outreach of relevance to the California Agricultural Experiment Station (http://www.caes.ucdavis.edu/admin/resources/aes/overview ).

Responsibilities:  The Department of Animal Science seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with research efforts focused on meat science and/or muscle biology.

The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded research program directed toward understanding and developing approaches for enhancing the quality, nutritional value, and human health benefits of meat, which may include pre- and post-harvest food safety, animal welfare, and/or the profitability or acceptability of food animal production systems. The successful candidate will coordinate with existing departmental faculty having expertise in microbiology, immunology, nutrition, modeling, genetics and genomics, physiology, behavior, reproduction, and food science. The appointee will teach an undergraduate upper division course on muscle biology and meat science/technology, and an animal management course targeting the recruit’s species of interest to meet the teaching needs of the departmental curriculum. Mentoring of graduate students, undergraduate student advising, curricular development, participation in and development of outreach programs, and performance of departmental and university service are expected. The successful candidate is expected to work with extension educators and partners to provide support for the animal and meat processing industries on topics spanning animal health, human health, and the environment. These combined activities will ultimately support the viability of California’s animal industries and yield insights to basic biological mechanisms and translatable outcomes consistent with the mission of the California Agricultural Experiment Station.

Qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent degree with an emphasis on meat science. Post-doctoral experience is preferred. Evidence of research excellence is expected. The candidate should have the ability to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses and the ability to develop and conduct extramurally-funded research in meat science

Departmental resources: The appointee will have access to wide-ranging animal and infrastructure resources and many collaborative opportunities within the department and the college including the Departments of Food Science & Technology and Nutrition. The department has a federally inspected abattoir and meat science laboratory. This position is expected to interact with extension educators and partners in allied industries. The research, teaching and outreach mission of the Department of Animal Science (http://animalscience.ucdavis.edu) focuses on the creation, development and distribution of basic and applied knowledge related to the biology and production of domestic animals, with a scope extending from the molecular to the ecosystem levels.

Salary: Commensurate with experience within the Assistant Professor rank at the University of California.
